Joy, pride and purpose highlighted the 15th Annual NightOUT Celebration at Slippery Rock University, April 9, with a keynote address delivered by Meg Evans, whose work centers on activism, advocacy and resistance within marginalized communities.

Evans, an assistant professor of higher and adult education at the University of Memphis, centered the keynote on the powerful theme: “Resist, Persist, and Celebrate.” Evans’ remarks embodied all three while bringing a heartfelt insight and urgency to the conversation.

A dynamic blend of group, solo and participatory dance performances that celebrated both defiance and joy highlighted the evening. The performance was led by SRU Dance Department with choreography by Ken Sprowls, a junior dual English writing and dance major from Washington (Lincoln Park HS). Sprowls’ original piece echoed the event’s theme through movement. The piece was followed by 14 dance majors who brought a spirit of celebration with their performance of “Don’t Hold Your Breath” by guest artist Shakia Barron.

The celebration also honored contributions within the community, recognizing outstanding students, faculty, staff and organizations that have made a lasting impact.
