College move-in day is an inflection point for students embarking on what could be one of the most transformative experiences of their lives. For students like Baylee Sleek, Slippery Rock University made that moment meaningful, welcoming her and other new students to campus on Aug. 20.

Sleek, a freshman public health major from Stoystown (North Star HS), was among the earlier group of students moving into residence halls.

As is expected from most incoming students taking such a big step forward in their lives, there were some early nerves involved.

“I was stressed out about move-in day, but it went really smoothly,” Baylee Sleek said. “All the helpers came and got all of my stuff; I didn’t even have to carry anything.”

Her father, Gregg Sleek, took a moment to thank some of the student volunteers walking by, as more than 500 students, faculty staff volunteers were on hand to help the 1,400 first-year and transfer students who moved in on Thursday.

“Everyone has been very welcoming and has answered any questions we’ve had,” said Erika Sleek, Baylee’s mother.

“The facilities are nice, the people, the staff, everyone is well-educated and if they don’t have the answer, they figure it out and get back to you,” Gregg Sleek said.

Baylee heard of SRU through some former high school track teammates who now compete for The Rock. It was their descriptions of the experience that initially made the University enticing.

“It’s a great atmosphere and they just love it so much, everything about it,” Baylee said. “They love the track team and the environment.”

Baylee, a two-time state champion in the high jump, is ready to make her mark.

“I’m nervous but I’m excited,” she said. “I hope to achieve new friendships and make it to nationals for track.”

“I hope that she’s going to get an awesome education and the track team is going to keep her focused,” Gregg Sleek said.

Erika added her hope is that SRU provides Baylee with good education and the opportunity to meet new friends, build relationships and try new things through clubs and sports.
