Record-breaking retention, increased students highlight Fall 2025 enrollment data

As of Sept. 18, 2025, SRU's 86% retention rate – the percentage of last year's first-year students who returned this fall – is the highest on record.

Slippery Rock University is a first-choice destination for students, as indicated by enrollment data for the Fall 2025 semester, released by the University on Sept. 18.

The highlights include:

  • 8,625 is the total enrollment, which is up 2.75% compared to last fall, marking SRU’s largest single-year increase since 2016.
  • 1,549 full-time, first-year undergraduate students is the largest such cohort at SRU since 2019.
  • 86.4% of the first-year students from last fall returned this year, which is the University’s highest retention rate on record. (Note: this statistic is as of Sept. 18, 2025.)
  • 57% of undergraduates are graduating in four years, which is the highest rate in the last five years.

“SRU is on the rise like never before with record growth in enrollment, retention and graduation success,” said Michael May, SRU’s vice president for enrollment management. “These are some of the key indicators that drive our rankings as a best value, most selective, and top public university. Our efforts to support students through career readiness initiatives, personalized advising and mentoring programs, and expanded learning and engagement opportunities are contributing to our growth and student success.”

The 15th day of classes at SRU, which was Sept. 15, is used as the official date for national and state reporting purposes; however, the data are considered preliminary because Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education verifies and reports official enrollment statistics next month.
