After surviving a near-fatal car accident in 2024, Slippery Rock University alumnus and professional bodybuilder David Morrow, ’93, has demonstrated remarkable resilience in his return to competition and success as an author.
“The day after Thanksgiving in 2024, I survived a traumatic car crash that should have killed me,” Morrow said. “I survived.”
Morrow’s recovery was extraordinary. Within months, he resumed his passion for bodybuilding and went on to compete in three competitions in fall 2025. Just 10 months after the car accident, he earned third place at the North Carolina State Bodybuilding Championships.
During his recovery, Morrow also focused on intellectual growth. He authored “Mental Fat Burning,” a book rooted in research he initially developed at SRU. The book applies more than 30 years of his experience in physiology, competitive bodybuilding, and fitness coaching, providing proprietary methods and a new approach to wellness.
“I had been wanting to write the book for almost 10 years, and I finally did it while out on disability,” said Morrow, a resident of Marina Del Rey, California. “The book itself has nothing to do with my traumatic car crash, but when the dust settles, it’s all tied together.”
“Mental Fat Burning” helps readers harness the mind “to supercharge metabolism, burn fat and unlock optimal physical and mental health.” It currently nominated for the International Impact Author of the Year award.
“Being able to put my book into print with the goal of helping other people achieve health and fitness and a positive mental state of mind is one of the most gratifying things I’ve ever done,” Morrow said.
While attending SRU as an exercise science major, Morrow was deeply involved in bodybuilding and campus fitness initiatives. The exercise science program played a significant role in his decision to enroll, aligning with his strong interests in science and fitness.
“I give credit to Slippery Rock University for being there for me and providing me with that education,” Morrow said. “Since then, I’ve spent the rest of my life building on that.”
Beyond the classroom, Morrow also highlighted the influence of the University’s fitness and weightlifting community, describing it as a network defined by passion, encouragement and consistency, all of which are qualities that continue to inspire him today.
Morrow was recently a finalist for Muscle and Fitness Magazine’s Man of the Year award in the 2026 Mr. Health and Fitness competition, further recognizing his perseverance in the face of adversity. The nomination connected Morrow to the origins of his fitness journey when he first started weightlifting at age 13 and his uncle gave him a copy of Muscle and Fitness.
“To have applied for a nomination and to have been picked as a finalist is just surreal to me,” Morrow said. “It literally takes me back to when I was 13 and was mesmerized by that magazine.”
For Morrow, the nomination represents a full-circle moment, one that highlights his lifelong dedication to fitness, as well as the enduring impact of his education and experiences at SRU.
“Even if I don’t win, the exposure that I will get will still help me support other people in getting to a higher level,” Morrow said. “I appreciate all the support that I have been given by people that know me and by Slippery Rock University. I will always be grateful for the education and the great life moments that I experienced while being a student at SRU.”
Morrow’s journey stands as a powerful example of resilience, determination and the lasting impact of a supportive community. From overcoming a life-threatening accident to achieving success in both bodybuilding and authorship, he continues to turn adversity into opportunity.
