A Slippery Rock University alumna was recognized for her career advancing justice and equity. Judge Nicola Henry-Taylor, ’93, received the Drum Major for Justice Award at the Allegheny County Bar Association’s 27th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast and Program at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church in Pittsburgh on Jan. 19.
According to the ACBA website, the event was “one of the biggest and most storied MLK Day events in the region” and served to commemorate “the life and legacy of Dr. King and his contributions to changes in law and social justice.”
Judge Henry-Taylor was elected to the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas in 2021.
After graduating cum laude from SRU with a bachelor’s degree in history, she went on to study law at Duquesne University, graduating in 1996 with her juris doctorate. Judge Henry-Taylor then served for more than 12 years as a private attorney, specializing in family and criminal law.
During her career she has served as commissioner on the Allegheny County Human Relations Commission, a member of the Pennsylvania Interbranch Commission for Gender, Racial, and Ethnic Fairness Legal Academics Working Group, as well as formerly serving as a member of the Pennsylvanians for Modern Courts Board of Advisors. Judge Henry-Taylor also served on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court Disciplinary Board Committee and is currently active in the Allegheny County Bar Association.
The MLK Day program was open to ACBA members and the public at large and included a buffet breakfast, a prayers service and the presentation of Judge Henry-Taylor’s award. More information regarding the event can be found on the ACBA website.
