Seventeen local high school students perform at SRU’s Honors Flute Ensemble

Cadence Durnell, from Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School, tests a bass flute as part of the annual Honors Flute Ensemble held in Swope Music Hall Feb. 22-23.

Seventeen local high school students honed their craft as flutists at Slippery Rock University, Feb. 22-23, as part of the annual Honors Flute Ensemble. The high school flutists participated side by side with the SRU Flute Choir members and attended masterclasses, workshops and rehearsals, before performing in a culminating concert.  

Guest artists included Alyssa Schwartz, professor of flute and musicology at Fairmont State University, and Ebonee Thomas, assistant professor of flute at the University of Texas at Austin’s Butler School of Music. There was also a eurhythmics workshop with Stephen Neely, director of the Carnegie Mellon University Marta Sanchez Dalcroze Training Center.
