In the early morning of the 24th anniversary of 9/11, Slippery Rock University’s U.S. Army ROTC program welcomed more than 80 students and community members to the bleachers of Mihalik-Thompson Stadium for the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. Participants climbed 2,200 steps, symbolizing the 110-floor ascent up the towers of the World Trade Center that members of the New York City Fire Department and other first responders made on Sept. 11, 2001.

“My family served in the Marines for 20 years—the active members in all of our service branches work so hard just for us to be here,” said Isabella Whitling, reflecting on the significance of the 9/11 anniversary. Whitling is a sophomore strategic communication and media major from Seneca (Cranberry HS) who is a cadet in the ROTC program.
