Hispanic Heritage Month 2025 at Slippery Rock University is taking shape in a series of celebrations and events that honor culture, uplift voices and inspire the community to learn, connect and grow together.

Hispanic Heritage Month is observed nationally from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. SRU’s programming will span Sept. 16 to Oct. 12, with an additional Dia de los Muertos celebration on Oct. 29.

Signature events at SRU include:

  • Hispanic Heritage Month Fiesta, 7-9 p.m., Sept. 20, at theSmith Student Center, Ballroom, which will include dancing to drums, Puerto Rican Bomba, food, crafts and other music.
  • Multicultural Panel: “Campus Leadership and Representation ‘Who Gets to Lead? Diversifying Student Government and Campus Organizations,'” 3:30 p.m., Sept. 23, Eisenberg Classroom Building, Room 111. A panel of campus experts will examine barriers to leadership participation and strategies for creating equitable pathways to campus involvement.
  • ¡Celebración! Hispanic Heritage Month Voice Recital, 2 p.m., Oct. 12, Swope Music Hall, Recital Hall. Tickets are $10 general admission and $5 for colleges students and they can be purchased online.

These events open to the public and the entire campus community is welcome to participate.

“My favorite event is the Fiesta because that’s when all of the hosting organizations come together for the first time,” said Lia Palermo, president of SOL, the Student Organization of Latinos/Hispanics. “This year is extra special because we’re bringing in guest artists to do a Puerto Rican-style dance.”

Palermo, a senior dual sport management and dance major from Warrendale (North Allegheny HS), is of Hispanic ancestry, but she encourages students of any ethnicity to get involved in multicultural organizations on campus.

“A lot of people think they can’t join SOL because they’re not Hispanic, but that’s not the case. SOL is a place for us to share our culture, and it’s the perfect opportunity to get together and just have fun,” Palermo said.

Hispanic Heritage Month events at SRU are hosted on campus by several multicultural organizations like the Office for Inclusive Excellence and SOL leading the way.

More Hispanic Heritage Month events are available on the University events calendar.

More information about the OIE is available on the University website.
