SRU celebrates LGBT History Month

Pride march with rainbow umbrellas
SRU celebrates LGBT History Month in October with a series of events including educational speakers.

October is LGBT History Month, and Slippery Rock University is celebrating by hosting programs that serve to educate, entertain and encourage students of all backgrounds and perspectives. The history month has been nationally recognized since 2009, giving a platform to the voices of the LGBT community.

Although June is Pride Month, October is a chance to honor the trailblazers of the early LGBT movements. LGBT History Month places more emphasis on education and understanding.

“This month is for honoring on how far the movement has come,” said Dominic Cristini, SRU’s assistant director of gender and sexuality in the University’s Office for Inclusive Excellence. “From an education standpoint, it’s important to focus on the actual movements that have shaped the community, from the first LGBT centers on college campuses up to where we are today.”

Students can attend a month of events observing LGBT History Month.

Events available to the public include:

More LGBTQ History Month events can be found on CORE, SRU’s online platform for student organizations and events. More information about LGBTQIA+ resources at SRU is available on the Office for Inclusive Excellence’s webpage.
