Changing perceptions, being inclusive and having fun. That’s what Slippery Rock University students did while collaborating with a local high school to raise awareness for people with disabilities, all while applying concepts from their course about adapted physical activity.

Students from SRU’s Disability Sports Course facilitated an interactive session with 40 students from Slippery Rock Area High School, May 2, teaching them sports that are adapted for people with disabilities. Sports included wheelchair basketball and sitting volleyball that were part of the high school’s weeklong inclusion campaign.

This opportunity was also part of a unit capstone assignment requiring students from the disability sport class to apply course concepts to real-world situations.

The class instructor was Dallas Jackson, associate professor of physical and health education.

More information about the adapted physical activity minor at SRU is available on the program’s webpage.
