Students at Slippery Rock University continue to experience the world and make transformative cultural connections. A group of 22 students and two faculty members recently visited Saga University in Japan where students were matched with conversation partners to develop their Japanese language skills and learn about Japanese culture.
As a part of a short-term, study abroad cultural immersion program, May 14-28, students also spent a day at an elementary school, toured Saga Castle and old samurai villages, explored the Yutoku Inari (Shinto) Shrine, the Kyushu Ceramic Museum, and the Ureshino Tea Exchange Center. They visited the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, where the faculty leaders and student volunteers conducted a peace ceremony to symbolize the friendship between Japan and the United States. Students made 500 origami cranes in preparation for this ceremony.

Faculty leaders were Yukako Ishimaru and Nick Katsiadas from the SRU Languages, Literatures, Cultures, and Writing Department.
More than 180 SRU students travel abroad each year as part of the University’s study abroad programs, including 10 short-terms programs led by faculty members and administrators.
More information about study abroad and language studies is available on the SRU website.
