The Roots’ pianist Ray Angry performs and speaks at SRU

A famous pianist came to Slippery Rock University to perform and discuss his journey as a musician. Ray Angry, best known for his weekly appearances on NBC’s “The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon” as a member of the house band, The Roots, performed and spoke at public event, Feb. 19, at SRU’s Swope Music Hall.

Angry is a pianist, producer, composer and arranger who is classically trained in gospel music with “one foot firmly planted in jazz and the other stirring the pot of pan-global pop,” according to his website. He is the CEO and founder of Mister Goldfinger Music Group, which released the album “Ray Angry One” and singles from his public domain project. Other albums include his solo piano project, “Ray Angry Three.”

In addition to his appearances on “The Tonight Show,” Angry’s film and television work includes composing music for Amy Schumer’s television shows and comedy specials, the documentary films “Why Is We Americans?” and “Descendant” on Netflix and many more. Angry’s symphonic debut, “Black Athena ~ Power”recently premiered with the Lexington Symphony. He has been commissioned to compose several new orchestral works that will premiere in 2025.

Angry’s appearance at SRU was sponsored by Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit art, education, and music organization. Refreshments were provided by the Frederick Douglass Institute at SRU.
