Irishia Romaine, a Slippery Rock University assistant professor of dance, has been named an Armstrong Now Artist-in-Residence by The Louis Armstrong House Museum and Archival Center. Romaine is a distinguished choreographer, filmmaker and educator with a research focus on the unwritten history of Black moving image arts through Africanist Aesthetics.

Artists selected for the residency will explore the Armstrong archival collection for inspiration to furnish new projects in their respective discipline.

“I am honored to be a 2025 Armstrong Now Artist in Residence,” Romaine said. “For me, Armstrong’s archive is not static; it is a living source, one that invites artists and scholars alike to reframe the histories we inherit and to move through them with both critical rigor and creative possibility. I’m eager to listen deeply, move in dialogue with materials, and to co-create something that honors his legacy.”

As part of the residency, Romaine will be performing at The Jazz Room (Jerry’s Place), 3 p.m., Oct. 8, in Queens, New York.

More information about the residency and the Louis Armstrong House Museum and Archival Center is available online.
