U.S. News names SRU a ‘Top Public’ and ‘Best Value’ school in 2026 rankings

Slippery Rock University is ranked No. 20 in the U.S. News Top Public Schools list in the North region.

Slippery Rock University stands proudly among the nation’s top institutions, earning recognition that reflects its unwavering commitment to excellence and student success. U.S. News & World Report has published its annual Best Colleges guidebook, ranking SRU highly in multiple categories. The guidebook ranks U.S. colleges and universities annually and is used by thousands of students to develop a comprehensive understanding of their options in higher education.

Within its Regional Universities North category, SRU was ranked:

  • #20 in Top Public Schools.
  • #26 in Best Colleges for Veterans.
  • #32 in Best Value Schools.
  • #55 in Regional Universities North.

SRU also ranked in the top 20 for Top Public Schools in last year’s rankings. This is also the 17th straight year that SRU has received Best Regional University recognition from U.S. News in its annual Best Colleges guidebook which ranks colleges and universities across the country.

U.S. News groups institutions into the categories of National Universities, National Liberal Arts Colleges, Regional Universities, and Regional Colleges. The Regional Universities group is further broken into the regions of North, South, Midwest and West. The Regional Universities North grouping has 170 institutions including SRU.

SRU’s is designated as a Northern Regional University because it offers a full range of undergraduate programs, some master’s programs, and a few doctoral programs. The Northern region includes schools in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New York, New Jersey, and the six New England states of New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Maine.

SRU is also designated as a public school by the publication, meaning that it and the other schools in its category are operated under the state government and at least partially funded by taxes and state subsidies.
