Slippery Rock University paid tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces during its annual Veterans Day Ceremony, Nov. 11, at the Russell Wright Alumni House.
The ceremony included remarks by both a student veteran –– Cayden Baker, a sophomore safety management major from Kennerdell (Cranberry HS) –– and an alumni veteran –– Jairus Moore, ’19, ’20M, SRU instructor of safety management. The ceremony concluded outside the building at the Alumni Veterans Memorial with the raising of the colors, a wreath-laying ceremony, a 21-gun salute conducted by cadets from SRU’s Army ROTC program, and the playing of “Taps.” Veterans from the campus and local community were also provided a complimentary lunch.
“Our veterans have fought for our ability to express ourselves, to grow, to learn, and to pursue our passions,” said Moore, who served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army. “These freedoms were safeguarded by our veterans, and we are profoundly grateful for that. The best way to honor our veterans is to live the values that they fought to protect––the values of freedom, the values of unity, those values of service.”
