Student choreography and creative achievements will be on display as the Slippery Rock University Dance Department presents the Fresh Moves Dance Showcase Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. in the Stoner West Dance Studio Theater. The showcase will feature nine choreographed performances by current SRU dance students. Tickets are $10 for general admission and can be purchased online at sru.edu/tickets or at the Smith Student Center information desk.
The Fresh Moves Dance Showcase will display a broad range of performances, including traditional Bharatanatyam pieces from students of Jaya Mani, an SRU professor of dance, and a historical reconstruction of modern dance pioneer Trisha Brown’s “Solo Olos.”
Students’ unique choreographic processes for Fresh Moves were guided by Lindsay Viatori, artistic director and associate professor of dance, and Erin Kouwe, production coordinator and assistant professor of dance. To have work accepted into the concert, students participated in a series of labs and classes where they received peer and faculty feedback during the development of their pieces.
“Each year we look forward to the Fresh Moves Dance Showcase as it features solos, duets and ensemble works created by SRU dance students,” Viatori said. “We are so proud to feature student choreography. These works are the culmination of many hours of embodied and creative research and spans multiple movement aesthetics.”
The student choreographers include:
- Shea Cooper, a senior dance major from Hanover (South Western HS).
- Maura Gibson, a senior dual dance and theatre major from Groves, Texas (Port Neches-Groves HS).
- Brooke McCarthy, a senior dance major from Pittsburgh (Upper St. Clair HS).
