Four from SRU present at American College Counseling Association conference

Karla Fonner, the Slippery Rock University dean of students; Kenneth Messina, a SRU associate professor of counseling and development; Rachel DeMaria, a SRU instructor of counseling and development; and John Mathe, a SRU assistant professor of counseling and development, presented at the American College Counseling Association Annual Conference, Jan. 30-Feb. 3, in New Orleans

  • Messina and Fonner presented a piece titled, “From Adversaries to Allies: Overcoming Obstacles to Building an Inclusive Community of Care,” which explored the unique collaborations between the Student Counseling Center and Student Affairs departments on campus as a model program for developing a strong community of care addressing student mental health needs on campus.
  • Messina and Mathe presented a piece titled, “NCAA Best Practice Guidelines for Student Athlete Mental Health: An Opportunity for Counseling Centers,” which explained how campus counseling centers can assist athletic departments in meeting the new NCAA mental health guidelines.
  • Messina and DeMaria presented a piece titled, “Building Connections on a Disconnected Campus: Balancing advocacy for our positions on campus with practical self-care,” which explained college counselors’ roles as advocates for student mental health and services on college campuses in a time of increased demand and decreased funding.
